How to Install a Dishwasher: A Guide for New Zealand Homeowners
Installing a new dishwasher can transform your kitchen routine - saving time and making cleanup easy.
Personally, we’re fans of a Fisher and Paykel Dishdrawer. Two dishwashers in the space of one, meaning you can pop one on after each meal and don’t have to run out of forks waiting for the dishwasher to be full to run a cycle! (or was that just us?)
At Ka Pai Plumbing, the team understands the importance of getting it done right. Whether you’re confident in your DIY skills or prefer to leave it to your usual plumber, this step-by-step guide will help you understand how to install your dishwasher.
What You’ll Need
Here’s what you’ll need for the job:
Adjustable spanner/wrench
Screwdrivers
Bucket or towel (to catch any water)
Power drill (optional)
If you’re replacing an old dishwasher, disconnect it from power, water, and drainage before starting. For a brand-new installation, make sure a water supply line, drain line, and power outlet are ready for connection (you might need to call your usual electrician for this).
Step 1: Prepare the Space
Turn Off Utilities
Shut off the water supply and power to the area where you’ll install the dishwasher.Measure the Space
Measure your cabinet opening to ensure your dishwasher fits snugly. Most dishwashers are 600 mm wide, but it’s always good to double-check.Inspect Connections
Confirm that the water inlet, drain, and power outlet are accessible and in good condition.
Step 2: Hook Up the Dishwasher
Connect the Water Supply
Attach the dishwasher’s water hose to the supply line in the kitchen. There should be a 20mm BSP connection that will require connecting the hose to the BSP thread hand tight.
Tighten it securely, but don’t overtighten.
Set Up the Drain Hose
Connect the dishwasher’s drain hose to your sink’s waste pipe. There should typically be a connection like in this picture shown.
Use a hose clamp for a secure fit, and ensure the drain hose forms a high loop to prevent backflow.
Plug in the Power
Plug the dishwasher into a grounded electrical outlet. For hardwired setups, ensure all connections are properly insulated and secured.
Step 3: Position and Test
Slide the Dishwasher Into Place
Carefully slide the dishwasher into its spot, ensuring hoses and wires aren’t pinched.Level the Dishwasher
Adjust the dishwasher’s feet (with a wrench if required) to make it level. This is crucial for proper drainage and operation.Run a Test Cycle
Turn on the water and power. Run a short cycle to check for leaks and ensure everything works as it should.
